WSSP Phillip Island 2025 : results of Mahias & Rinaldi in race 1

22 February 2025

Race resume

Saturday saw the first race of the 2025 World Supersport Championship at Phillip Island (Australia).

After a fine qualifying session the day before, Lucas Mahias set off from the front row, quickly proving his incisiveness, finding himself in 2nd position on the very first lap. The French rider then engaged in a great battle with Can Öncü, which enabled him to become the leader. After a few laps, the No. 94 had to give up a few positions following a mistake which put him off the line. He was then hindered by a competitor’s smoke, leaving him no opportunity for a good result. With this weekend’s race having a “Flag to flag” procedure (mandatory pit stop with tire change), Lucas Mahias was able to rely on his team to change the wheels in the allotted time. Although the 2017 World Superport Champion was penalized for exiting the pit lane too early, the minimum penalty would not have hampered his race (penalty of 0.050 seconds). In the second half of the race, the number 94 fought hard on every lap aboard his Yamaha R9. He finished 9th, but can still hope to do well in Australia for tomorrow’s 2nd race.

On Michael Rinaldi’s side, the new GMT94 rider was not rewarded. Starting from 10th position, the Italian rider immediately showed his ambitions, quickly finding himself in 6th place. A technical problem forced the number 21 rider to stop the race, but his first race sensations with the Yamaha R9 give him hope for a good race on Sunday.
