WorldSSP Estoril 2026: GMT94 Fighting at the Front

For GMT94 Yamaha, the objective upon arriving at Estoril was clear: to fight for the podium.
It is a circuit that brings back good memories for both of the team’s riders. Lucas Mahias claimed his most recent World Supersport Championship victory here, while Roberto Garcia was crowned 2024 Moto2 European Champion at the Portuguese track.

A promising Friday for Lucas, a more difficult start for Roberto

On Friday morning, the team headed into the opening free practice session with confidence.
From his very first laps, Lucas Mahias showed that he would be a serious contender. Riding his Yamaha R9 on race tyres, the Frenchman immediately displayed a very strong pace.
For Roberto Garcia, unfortunately, the session was much shorter than expected. After suffering a technical issue just a few laps into the session, the Spanish rider was forced to return to the garage and bring his practice session to an early end.
Despite this setback, Christophe Guyot remained confident ahead of the afternoon’s qualifying session:
“Lucas is already on the pace and Roberto is very fast here. I’m fully behind both of them for this afternoon.”

Lucas Mahias on the front row

At 4:00 pm, the entire team was ready for qualifying. Run strategies and tyre choices had all been carefully prepared to give both GMT94 riders the best possible chance of securing a strong position on the grid.
Lucas Mahias began the session on used tyres to get a feel for the track before returning to the garage. His assessment was simple: “We don’t touch anything on the bike. It’s up to me to do the job.”
The Frenchman then headed back out on fresh tyres. It did not take long for the number 94 to light up the timing screens in red, showing that he was ahead of the provisional fastest lap. Moments later, he moved to the top of the standings.
After another stop in the pits and a final set of fresh tyres, Lucas went back on the attack. In the closing minutes, he once again set the fastest time before another rider eventually managed to improve on his lap.
Nevertheless, Lucas Mahias secured an excellent front-row starting position.
For Roberto Garcia, the task was more difficult. Having missed most of the free practice session, the 20-year-old had to use his opening qualifying run to get fully up to speed with the circuit.
After several laps, he returned to the garage to work with his crew chief Arnold, analysing the sectors where he could improve and fine-tuning the setup of his Yamaha R9. Roberto then headed back out in pursuit of a faster lap.
Lap after lap, the Spaniard improved his times, but his rivals were also getting faster after benefiting from considerably more track time during the morning session. Roberto eventually finished qualifying in 19th position. It was a disappointing result, but the young Spaniard would once again prove that he is, above all, a true racer.

Race 1: Mahias at the front, Garcia charges through the field

Saturday, 1:55 pm. Helmets on, Lucas Mahias and Roberto Garcia focus on the race ahead, surrounded by their respective crews.
At 2:00 pm, the red lights go out.
Lucas makes an excellent start and immediately puts himself among the frontrunners. Roberto also gets away perfectly, gaining several positions through the opening corners to move up to 15th.
At the front, Lucas Mahias impresses once again with his speed. However, the Frenchman has to fight lap after lap against bikes that are particularly fast down the straights. The 2017 World Supersport Champion refuses to give in and fights hard for every position.
He eventually crosses the finish line in 5th place. It is not yet the podium the team had hoped for, but the speed is clearly there, with another opportunity awaiting on Sunday.
Starting much further back, Roberto Garcia produces a spectacular charge through the field. The Spaniard gains position after position and even manages to climb as high as 3rd place during the race.
After an intense battle, Roberto eventually finishes 7th. More importantly, he sets the fastest lap of the race, a performance that earns him pole position for Sunday’s Race 2.

Race 2: GMT94 comes close to a major result

The entire GMT94 team had been eagerly awaiting the second race of the weekend.
Starting from pole position, Roberto Garcia launches off the line like a rocket and immediately takes the lead, even managing to open a small gap over his rivals.
Lucas Mahias, starting 10th on the grid and once again showing his strength off the line, quickly gains several positions to move up to 8th.
For Roberto, everything is going perfectly. The Spanish rider responds to every attack from his rivals and remains firmly in the fight at the front.
But as he approaches a braking zone alongside several other riders, Roberto puts his leg out to stabilise his Yamaha R9. A rival, slightly too optimistic under braking, then hits him hard in the calf.
Due to the force of the impact, Roberto is forced to retire and heads to the medical centre for further checks. Fortunately, the GMT94 rider escapes without any serious injury.
Meanwhile, Lucas Mahias continues his charge through the field.
Having climbed to 5th position, the Frenchman looks particularly aggressive aboard his Yamaha R9 and eventually manages to take the lead of the race. With his most recent WorldSSP victory having come right here at Estoril, hopes begin to rise that history could repeat itself.
However, a red flag caused by an incident brings the race to a halt.
After the track is cleaned, Race Direction announces a restart over just six laps. Lucas lines up in 2nd position on the grid.
Once again, the number 94 makes a perfect start and immediately takes the lead. Lap after lap, he holds onto first place, and the tension begins to rise inside the GMT94 garage.
Unfortunately, hopes of victory disappear a few laps later. Arriving at a section of the track that is still dirty, Lucas misses his braking point and is forced to run straight on.
The Frenchman refuses to give up and immediately goes back on the attack, recovering several positions. He eventually crosses the finish line in 5th place.

Next stop: Jerez for the season finale

GMT94 Yamaha leaves Estoril with a sense of frustration, as the potential shown by Lucas Mahias and Roberto Garcia suggested that a podium — or even more — was within reach.
But with Lucas securing a front-row start, Roberto setting the fastest lap in Race 1 and taking pole position for Race 2, as well as both riders leading laps during the weekend, GMT94 clearly demonstrated that it has the speed to fight at the front.
The team now heads to Spain and Jerez for the final round of the 2026 World Supersport Championship.
After such a competitive weekend in Estoril, there is every reason to believe GMT94 can finish the season on a high.
