The circuit of Nevers Magny-Cours (France) will host the World Supersport championship from 3rd to 5th September 2021. The French Motorcycling Federation (FFM) has decided to invest more heavily from 2021 in the future of French racers. The FFM will join forces with GMT94 and Yamaha France who are carrying out many projects for the youth, particularly in the French Superbike Championship. The leading French rider in Supersport 600 class will automatically be selected to race alongside Jules Cluzel (three victories and 13 podiums with GMT94, 20 total career victories), and Fédérico Caricasulo (6 victories). He or she will race a GMT94 Yamaha R6 and will draw from the experience of teammates with 73 podiums between them.
Sébastien Poirier (FFM President): “Promoting French motorcycle racing is one of the missions of the FFM. I therefore want us to put everything in place to allow the most talented to reach the very highest level. Our partnership with the GMT94, beyond the actions carried out with the youth for many years, and a commitment to world championship racing, will enhance our French championship. The motorcycle models used are the same as in the World Championship. The technical regulations are very close in terms of settings. The FFM is joining with a project that reinforces my goal to see the French Superbike Championship as an important step towards the world championships. »
Vincent Thommeret (Yamaha Motors France Director): “We had already participated in the project in 2019 with the wild card given to Maximilien Bau by GMT94. I was able to see the enthusiasm in young people and observe the hope that this approach, which rewards sporting performance alone, represents. It seemed obvious to Yamaha to repeat the operation. Some young riders from the bLU cRU program are in competition for this selection, which also proves the success of this training. »
Christophe Guyot (GMT94 Team Manager): “Since its inception, GMT94 has accompanied and supported French riders. We race in an international championship, but every year we have at least one French rider in our team. This wild card will make it possible to evaluate the level of the riders racing in the national championship. It will allow everyone to progress, to work to improve and to push French sprint racing towards the highest levels. We hope that this approach will be followed by other teams who will be competing in a world championship. It is essential to prepare for the future and to offer the best reward to a rider who wins the French championship”.
