The Supersport World Championship continues its European tour this weekend with the sixth round of the season at the MotorLand Aragón circuit. Located in Alcañiz, Spain, this event promises to be a crucial one for GMT94 Yamaha, which currently sits fourth in the team standings with 133 points following an encouraging start to the season.
Elevation and speed
At 5.077 km long and featuring 17 turns, MotorLand Aragón is one of the most impressive circuits on the WorldSBK calendar. Its modern layout alternates between long, fast corners, heavy braking zones, and significant elevation changes, offering riders a constant sense of speed in a Western-style scenery.
The very long straight, nearly 1.7 km in length, also poses a particular challenge for the Supersport teams, especially given that high temperatures are forecast throughout the weekend.
Turning potential into results
GMT94 arrives in Spain determined to build on the strong performance it displayed in the recent rounds at Balaton and Most.
The Yamaha riders impressed with their pace, with Roberto Garcia setting the lap record during the warm-up at Most, just ahead of Lucas Mahias, who also lapped under the previous benchmark time.
Unfortunately, both riders then crashed during the race while they were in contention for the podium.
The goal for the weekend is therefore clear: maintain this speed without crashing to capitalize on these strong performances and secure valuable points at the finish line.
This round in Aragón will also mark the debut of the new Mutuelle des Motards logo on the GMT94 Yamaha R9s. A symbolic visual evolution for this historic partner of the French team, which has been committed to the motorcycling community for over forty years.
Lucas Mahias returns to the track of his first WorldSSP victory
Lucas Mahias is looking forward to this race on a track he enjoys. In fact, the Frenchman secured his very first World Supersport Championship victory at Aragón in 2017.
While he is enthusiastic about returning to a track close to home, he remains aware of the challenges that the heat and the circuit’s long straight could pose for the Yamaha R9. The GMT94 rider nevertheless hopes to capitalize on his experience and positive feeling to stay in touch with the leading group.
Roberto Garcia wants to shine on home turf
For Roberto Garcia, this Spanish round is bound to hold a special significance. The young GMT94 rider arrives on home soil highly motivated after a frustrating weekend at Most, despite putting in an excellent performance.
Convinced of the Yamaha R9’s potential and the work the team has accomplished in recent weeks, the Spaniard believes he has a solid foundation to aim for the top positions. In front of his home crowd, the goal will clearly be to return to the podium.
