GMT94 Cremona 2024: Mahias/Öttl results free practice and qualifying

20 September 2024

Race resume

The GMT94 Yamaha riders started today the 9th round of the World Superbike Championship in Cremona (Italy).

In Supersport, Lucas Mahias had to deal with a shoulder that is still sore from the violent collision at Magny-Cours a fortnight ago. After a free practice session which allowed him to test his shoulder and immediately get back into a good rhythm, the French rider set about qualifying with the firm intention of doing well. Finding himself on the same timesheets as Stefano Manzi (Yamaha R6 and P2 in qualifying) in the first 3 sectors, Lucas preferred to ‘ensure’ in the 4th sector, which required more position changes. Despite this, the 2017 World Supersport Champion finished 2nd on the Yamaha grid and finished a fine 7th overall.

Mario Kupper, Team Manager of the KM99 in Endurance, came to support Lucas Mahias, his former rider. The GMT94 rider expressed his congratulations to his team after finishing on the podium (2nd) at the last Bol d’Or.

On the Superbike side, Philipp Öttl’s lap times remain respectable, but insufficient to hope to start from a good position. The German rider still hasn’t found the operating instructions for his Yamaha R1. The technicians and the rider are waiting for the breakthrough that often came in free practice 3 up until the Assen race (Netherlands). The whole team is behind its rider, who will give it his all tomorrow.

In the Women’s World Cup, French rider Emily Bondi put in a fine performance in FP1, finishing 6th on a wet track. The number 4 Yamaha R7 then put up a good fight with her compatriot Ornella Ongaro in qualifying. The two Frenchwomen will start tomorrow’s race from 12th and 15th on the grid. The GMT94 team wishes them the best of luck.
